Mechanical and electronic solutions from a single source
Munich/Hamburg, May 6, 2013 – Juergen Meyer, Head of the Automotive Division of Berner & Mattner, is now also Director Automotive Division of Assystem GmbH in Germany. Since 2003, the 48-year-old electronics engineer has been responsible for product development processes and services in the field of electronic systems development of the Automotive Division at Berner & Mattner. The joint leadership reinforces the intention of the international parent group Assystem, a leading engineering service provider with headquarters in France, to better pool the technical and sector-specific strengths of the subsidiaries.
Technically integrated, the German Assystem subsidiaries offer a comprehensive service portfolio ranging from safety & systems engineering to calculation and construction of components, the specification and model-based development of ECU functions, AUTOSAR & Virtual Integration, engineering and operation of test systems through to the development of hardware prototypes including small series production. With this portfolio, the companies support the customers through the entire development cycle of innovative and new vehicle functions while assuming responsibility for implementing these challenging projects.
"We're happy to take on responsibility for complete packages in development or series production," says Juergen Meyer. "As Assystem, we are financially in the position to assume large-scale projects at a fixed price. In terms of employees, too, we can rely on the group´s worldwide qualified resources, such as Romania."
Center for complex calculations reduces development costs
in the field of mechanics
Munich/Hamburg, April 23, 2013 – Berner & Mattner teams up with Assystem to establish a dedicated Automotive Competence Center for Stress Engineering & Simulation in Munich. In this Center, the engineers are mainly focusing on the calculation of mechanical aspects. These simulations are getting more and more important in the automotive industry as OEMs are optimizing their development costs also in the field of mechanics. The service portfolio ranges from linear-static strength calculations to very complex non-linear simulations through to virtual crash testing.
With the Competence Center for Stress Engineering & Simulation, Berner & Mattner and Assystem complement their range of services offering electronic and mechanical services from a single source. The development processes in the field of mechanics are characterized by conflicts between safety, sustainability, costs and weight aspects as well as increasingly varying material usage. By pooling its methodology competency and by building up special tool chains, the Competence Center offers efficient solutions. By calculating and simulating possible application scenarios in early development stages, issues can be clarified that normally could only be tested with costly prototypes leading to significant cost reductions at OEMs. In addition to normal FE strength calculations, multi body simulations as well as thermomechanics and vibration analyses are carried out.
"Finite element calculations are being successfully deployed in the automotive development. We pool the know-how in our Competence Center in order to validate components efficiently with the mathematical model already in the earliest development phase", explains Juergen Meyer, Head of the Automotive Division at both Berner & Mattner and Assystem. "There is a huge potential of cost savings and acceleration of development processes in this area, mostly playing an important role in new development fields such as hybrid and eMobility concepts as well as new materials."

The offered services range from minor seat modifications to complete cabin upgrades.
Key product highlights
Silver Atena will be showing an electronic dual-channel V12 FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) from its current control unit family for aircraft engines. The FADEC enables comfortable single lever control of a 12-cylinder common rail Diesel aircraft engine and incorporates lifetime monitoring as well as an intelligent fault management. With the SLAT MCE Silver Atena has developed a flight control unit that controls the electrical adjustment of the slat in the new A350 XWB.
Also on display is the company's latest Group-owned R&D project: the Aircraft Simulator. This airplane simulation platform, entirely created by Assystem, meets both challenges of development and management of innovative projects in integration testing, as well as in-house training enhancement. Aircraft simulators are complex and expensive systems that have long been available only to OEMs and professional pilots. With the development of its own aircraft simulator platform, Assystem now has a tool that can easily be upgraded and used for system integration testing operations. Moreover, this project also shows the company's commitment to extend and improve its internal training courses: within its training centres – the Assystem Aerospace Institute, the Aircraft Simulator can be used to model several aircraft systems that Assystem is currently working on, making interactive learning sessions become much more realistic.
